The Evolution of Prom
Prom is one of the most highly anticipated events during a young person’s high school career - students begin preparing for their prom months in advance! Prom is glitz, glam, and a fun conclusion to senior year. Prom has evolved significantly over the years, however.
Its Origins
Prom, formally known as a promenade dance, has been a tradition for hundreds of years. Prom dates back to the 19th century and was originally an event for college students. Much like debutante balls, this formal dance was a rite of passages for students transitioning into adulthood. The event also promoted social etiquette for graduating seniors.
Prom was different from coast-to-coast, but still held many of the same practices. At prom, students shared light refreshments and dinner, which preceded live music and dancing.
Prom in 2019
Prom was a simple yet elegant occasion in its early years. In 2019, this dance is an extravagant affair. High school seniors sport gowns and tuxedos, dine at a restaurant prior to the event, hire photographers to document the evening, ride in limousines to the venue, and more.
Many high schools present class superlatives at the event, such as Prom King and Queen or “Most Likely to Succeed.”
Though prom has changed in many ways, it often still holds true to tradition.
